My Favorite Small Shops in Portland, OR

Palace in Portland for Conscious by Chloé

Whether you need a last minute Valentine's gift or just want to treat yourself to a luxurious body oil, these Portland small shops got you covered.

It was very hard to narrow them down to 5, but you'll soon be able to discover all my favortie in the Conscious by Chloé City Guide I'm currently working on.

1. Palace

Palace has got the best zine selection. I'm always tempted to get one of the many funny and activist pins they sell. And, last but not least, they also offer a wode variety of zero-waste friendly accessories (furoshiki, wooden utensils). Also, the shop is accross the street from my favorite lunch spot, Luce.

Spartan in Portland for Conscious by Chloé

2. Spartan

I never miss an opportunity to stop by Spartan after looking for vintage treasures at the Portland Flea. I am a fan of their kitchenware. Their taste in ceramics is on point. It's now also very close to my new studio and within walking distance from Rejuvenation and its little cantine, Figlia Americana.

Field Trip in Portland for Conscious by Chloé

3. Field Trip

Field Trip can be summed up in 3 words: California meets Oregon. There's something so peaceful in Kara's shop. Her self-care selection is simply the best in Portland and I love her penchant for all things witchy (incences, crystals, tarot workshops).

Wild Poppy Goods in Portland for Conscious by Chloé

4. Wild Poppy Goods

Wild Poppy is the last small shop I discovered in Portland last November. Taylor's aesthetics got me hooked at the first Instagram post I saw. Funny story: I had forgotten my wallet, but still came back home with a jade roller and paid for it online once I got home. It's the little things that make you come back.

Beam & Anchor in Portland for Conscious by Chloé

5. Beam & Anchor

I save a visit to Beam & Anchor for special occasions, especially when I'm on the hunt for a host/hostess gift. Their home goods selection is so simple and elegant! Plus, they carry Roots & Crowns product, and I'm a total fan of Max's herbal apothecary.

Do you live in Portland or are you planning on visiting Bridge City any time soon? What's the one shop you('d) love to stop by?

My Favorite Conscious Brands for Women

Favorite Conscious Brands by Conscious by Chloé

It seems like with a summer of work and travel in and out of the country, I've missed the heat wave that struck Portland. Now that the days are gonna be grayer and the evenings cooler, I've started taking cardigans and long-sleeves out of my closet and putting them on my capsule rack.

I'm also evaluating my fall wardrobe and contemplating on adding new (to me) items.

In my first years as a working professional, I used to buy at least one new piece of clothing a week. It brought me joy, sometimes relief, rarely regrets.

As time passed, I moved, I changed, I opened my eyes. And now I know what the true cost of fashion is.

My approach to apparel has drastically changed over the past few years. But my love for style is still intact.

Clothes are still my weakness. I take great joy in getting dressed in the morning (most of the time). So for the past few years, I've tried to live by Coco Chanel's words:

"Fashion changes, but style endures."

"Simplicity is the key note of all true elegance."

It now takes me days, sometimes weeks before I make a purchase - unless my favorite local store hosts its bi-annual sale.

I am aware that shopping consciously is not the easiest and not always the cheapest solution. Trust me, I've got an Excel table containing and comparing all sorts of data!

Undoubtedly, the best way to make a conscious purchase is still to buy vintage and second hand. But if you also want to support ethical makers, retailers and designers, you'll find my current favorites below.

Their tees are a staple in my wardrobe and might be the only same items I allow in 2 different colors.

American manufacturing, non-toxic dyes, sustainable fabrics, a zero-waste philosophy, and above all, enduring style.

The whole collection is on my wishlist. Do follow Liz on Instagram, you'll only grow fonder of her brand and team!

Jumpsuit. Period.

The softest striped dress I own. I can't remember how many times I've washed it and it's still my favorite lounge/beach/night dress.

I've worn my sexy-back dress to every. single. wedding I've attended for the past 2 years and it's still pretty magical.

Focusing on a silhouette that complements supple lines and comfort, the collection is characterized as minimal and edgy.

The best way to shop from indie boutiques and emerging designers from their racks to your closet.

  • Veja - Made consciously in Brazil.

If I ever need to replace my current pair of sneakers, this is where I'll get them.

  • Nisolo - Made consciously in Peru.

I love a classic pair of oxfords.

  • Bryr - Made in San Francisco, CA.

Clogs are my latest obsession, whatever the season, with or without socks!

Hailey Boyd is my style icon, and makes the most colorful and beautiful mules.

  • Boswell (hats) - Made in Portland, OR.

Some day, one of these hats will me mine!

Local. Stylish. Affordable.

  • Seaworthy (jewelry) - Made in Portland, OR.

Statement earrings, come to mama!

Their mascara and foundation is the best I've tried so far.

If you haven't read Skin Cleanse yet, do it now!

  • RMS (make up) - Made in the USA.

Their versatile LIP2CHEEK is a classic.

  • OLO (fragrance) - Made in Portland, OR.

I hear the Lightning Paw fragrance is a must!

Also, Project JUST is a great resources to align your purchases with your values. It empowers you to make informed and thoughtful decisions about the clothes you buy.

Do you have any recommendations for second hand resources and/or ethical makers? I'd love to check them out! Please share them in the comments section below!

Have a Blissful Weekend #9

Make Your Own Green Cleaners Workshop by Conscious by Chloé

What are you up to this weekend?

I'm currently on a glamping trip in Southern Oregon, so I'll probably catch up with work and prepare an article for next week (sorry I let you down last Tuesday), but I did schedule cocktail hour with a friend on Saturday night, so there's that. Oh no wait! I'm teaching a workshop on Saturday morning!

I hope you'll have a great one and in the meantime, here are a few links from around the web:

  • Thinking about going on a walking tour in my city.
  • The most beautifully organized thrift store.
  • Contemplating on adding a touch of color to my wardrobe this summer.
  • I'm in desperate need of self care. This book might help.
  • I'm gonna try this pancakes recipe very soon.
  • This Fashion Revolution editorial is so beautiful.
  • A great piece of advice.
  • I don't really have the budget for new clothes that fit my many criteria, so I'm thinking about making my own, inspired by this book that I perused at a local shop.
  • This app is now free.

Have a Blissful Weekend #8

Keukenhof Flower Fields in Holland by Conscious by Chloé

What are you up to this weekend?

On Saturday, I'm going to vote to elect the next French president (wish us luck). Saturday also happens to be Earth Day, so I'll take some time to reflect on my impact on the planet and reevaluate some of my habits (less dairy, turn off electronics at night, water plants with rain barrel water, etc.).

I hope you'll have a great one and in the meantime, here are a few links from around the web:

Portland recommendations:

Since many of you are reading this blog from not too far away, I thought I'd add a special segment at the end of my week-end recommendations, just for you. You can find more local & conscious tips and events on the Zero Waste PDX Facebook page.

Have a Blissful Weekend #7

Mason jar cozy by Conscious by Chloé

What are you up to this weekend?

I'm at home with a cold and will spend the next two days taking care of myself and... working.

I hope you'll have a great one and in the meantime, here are a few links from around the web:

  • I got one of these this morning to clear my sinuses.
  • It's time to register for the next food swap. Are there any in your area?
  • This interview.
  • I just discovered my new favorite online shop section, vintage + US made! Can you believe I do not own one of these?
  • I'll probably visit this pop-up later during the week-end if I feel a little better.
  • This album on repeat.
  • I'd love to stop by this new spot too for a little self-care but might just to go here for a steam.
  • I need all the comfort food.
  • Current life saver.
