Reusable Silicone Bags

Before it all happened, Octave and I spent a day on the coast, foraging for food and resting on the beach for a moment to enjoy a low waste lunch I had packed in the morning.

The trip wasn't exactly planned, so I grabbed what I had on hand and put together an unfussy lunch to recharge our batteries in the middle of an intense beach day.

How wasteful was our lunch?

  • Peanuts in a jar - straight from the bulk aisle to our pantry and our picnic basket - zero waste

  • Bagels - sold packaged in recyclable plastic film - recyclable, not curbside

  • Hummus - homemade from ingredients sold in bulk - zero waste

  • Avocado, apples - compost (skins) + trash (sticker)

  • Greens - sold in bulk - zero waste

  • Not pictured: a beer in a can for him, a kombucha in a glass bottle for me - recyclable curbside

Stasher Bag review

I stored our bagels in 2 reusable and dishwasher safe silicone sandwich bags and did not think twice about a potential hummus leak in our picnic basket. Once we got home, I washed the Stashers with my usual diluted Dr. Bronner's dish soap (we don't have a dishwasher) and left them to dry on the counter.

Now that road trips and beach days are out of the question, I'm planning on giving my trusted and homemade bee's wax wraps a break and replacing them by Stashers of various colors and sizes. I'm especially excited to use them to conveniently stack meals and summer fruit flat in the freezer for quick dinners and smoothies.
