How to Stop Spam, Junk Mail, and Targeted Ads

Every time I move to a new place, I try to make sure that junk mail will not follow me.

So, to the best of my abilitites, I do not give out my personal information unless it is absolutely necessary (i.e. the spa does not need my mailing address).

I've recently been getting unsollicited credit card offers and did a deep dive into privacy protection.

If you live in the US, here are a couple steps to make sure you won't be bothered too much with unwanted marketing material.

  • DMAchoice.org offers consumers a simple, step-by-step process that enables them to decide what mail they do and do not want such as Credit Offers, Catalogs, Magazine Offers and Other Mail Offers. You’ll have to pay a $2 processing fee, and your registration will last for 10 years.

  • OptOutPrescreen.com is the official Consumer Credit Reporting Industry website to accept and process requests from consumers to Opt-In or Opt-Out of firm offers of credit or insurance.

  • Yellow Pages Opt Out allows you to select the number of directories you wish to receive (or not). You are able to select individual books only, select multiples and opt out of receiving any or all directories.

  • Catalog Choice is a non-profit organization working to stop junk mail for good. Gather the unwanted catalogs and other junk mail that clutter your home or office. Search for the sender, and submit the opt—out request.

  • WebChoices is a tool that scans your browser and allows you to opt out of website cookies and avoid targeted ads from participating companies.

  • The National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls.
