I love supporting local makers, but I don't necessarily always have the budget to add their pieces to my closet.

And then, sometimes, the universe conspires in my favor.

I've been a fan of Lauren Winter for a couple years now. I wear her pants weekly, no matter the season - do you remember them in my fall capsule?

The quality of her linen is perfect, the cuts are very flattering and her aesthetics and mission align perfectly with mine.

I'd been eyeing her wraparound jumpsuit and waited for the right oppotunity (i.e. sale) to make a move.

The jumpsuit is everything I expected. The linen is the softest, the color complements my skin tone and hair color just like I wanted it. The fit is great though I might have been able to size down (I chose a medium). I feel like it's a little bulky on the bust and shoulders.

Now let's talk about my shoes!

I was following Rachel online, first met her IRL at the Sustainable Fashion Forum and again at an Airbnb Experience hosts meet-up here in Portland (she teaches shoemaking workshops, I host tours of my "Zero Waste" Home). She later organized an open studio event where I got these samples for a steal.

The rubber soles are very comfortable and the leather is buttery soft. They are now my go-to summer sandals.

If you're not able to come to Portland to take a shoe-making workshop, you can order a kit and make your own at home! How cool is that?!

I consider myself very lucky to be able to get to know the people who made items I wear on a daily basis.

How do you shop for a somehow pricey piece? Or do you save your bucks for the right time and splurge? Do you wait for a sale and "risk missing out"?

A Recap of my 10×10 Closet Challenge Recap - Fall Edition (2017)

Fall 2017 10×10 Challenge Recap by Conscious by Chloé

I wrapped my first 10x10 Challenge close to 2 weeks ago and think that now is a good time to look back on it.

Since I've jumped into this challenge without preparation and did not plan outfits or put a lot of thought into the pieces I chose, this could have been a total disaster.

But I guess beginner's luck was with me, or the stars, or whatever else I believed in during these 10 days, everything worked out fine and I'm so glad I took that challenge.

Here are the subjects I want to cover in this article:

  • My motivations to participate in the challenge

  • The 10 items I selected

  • Style notes

  • A few takeaways

Fall 2017 10×10 Challenge Recap by Conscious by Chloé

My motivations

The fact that I joined the challenge ar the very last minute explains a lot.

After an eventful summer, I was back at home, trying to find my routine, looking for content to post (somewhat regularly) on the blog, transitioning to a new season, wondering what I would wear (or more accurately fit into) during the colder months after a summer of letting go and indulging.

So there you have it. I needed structure, something regular and short-term to kickstart a new routine for a new season (of the year, of my life).

Fall 2017 10×10 Challenge Recap by Conscious by Chloé

| HAIR | I wear my hair down 99.9% of the time. That's just how I roll. I'm slowly realizing that my hair has grown and that I can now style it, wear a ponytail if I want to (which is good for my yoga practice. No, seriously, between my hair and my glasses, it can be tricky to master the downward facing dog pose). Still, I prefer my face surrounded my hair, I don't like the way my bangs look when my hair is pulled back, and I like to wear hats. So I played a little with my styling wand, and that's enough to keep me happy for now. I take things slow, I can now style my hair in less than 3 minutes, and that's more than I care to spend on this activity. So there's room to improve, room to play, and I should start thinking about it, because this could go 2 ways: (1) I'm gonna cut my hair again (yeah, I cut my own hair, because I'm cheap and impatient); (2) I'm gonna want to dye or highlight my hair and I will regret it during the process (burnt scalp), after the first shampoo (hello dry and weakened hair) or after a couple weeks (hello regrowth). No really, it took a lot of willpower to get this far, so I'm gonna try to have a little fun with my hairstyling skills. Send Pinterest inspo or youtube tutorials my way. Thaaaaaanks!

| ACCESSORIES | I've pared down my accessories collection (I became my little cousins favorite when I brought them bags of them to chose from) a couple years ago and tend to wear the same ones over and over (family heirlooms, gifts from Octave and a couple pieces I chose for myself). Since this part of an outfit was not "regulated" by the challenge, I expected to go a little crazy but ended up wearing the same necklace twice and regretted it. It's funny how when you have freedom or too much to chose from, you get analysis paralysis and end up revolving around the same pieces. This made me realize that even though my accessories collection is minimal, there are certain pieces I have not worn in a while, so I'm slowly trying every single piece on, and making a decision to either wear it more, part with it and, for some of them, repair (I stepped on one of my rings a while ago and need to reshape it, and one necklace lost a part which I need to replace). So there's that. Always room for minimizing, reevaluating, caring, appreciating.

Fall 2017 10×10 Challenge Recap by Conscious by Chloé

| TUCKS & ROLLS | The top my mom made me is a little too big, but this might make me love it more because I can tuck it, roll it and even tie a know in the back. It makes for such a versatile piece. I cannot wear a long sleeved top without rolling the sleeves. And the same thing goes with my jeans, I have to show my ankles, socks, boots. I recently cut vertically the front of a trench coat that looked too bulky on me. I never closed it, so I figured I'd make the most of it and just remove the extra fabric, tie the belt in the back rather than in the front, and, of course, roll my sleeves.

Takeaways

This was a fun experience overall.

This 10x10 has been both a styling and a blogging challenge for me, and I'm very proud I got through it. It made me realize that sometimes you shouldn't sweat it. On the one hand, you can get great results by just giving something a try. And on the other hand, it's ok to try something and fail. You'll learn something no matter what!

I have to say that I got a little anxious as, as days went by, the styling options seemed restrained.

But I found support and inspiration in the 10x10 community. Browsing through the #10x10friends and getting comments from you guys and from other participants really kept me going.

The weather also did not play in my favor at the end of the challenge, so I was afraid that if I skipped one day I would just give up.

But I was lucky to have the best supporter by my side. I really want to give a shout out to and thank Octave who's been a really good sport during those 10 days, shooting and editing every single day during those 10 days.

Conclusion

I'm not sure yet whether I'll do this again, we'll see in January 2018.

Now I'd love to know what you thought about this experiment I shared with you here. Did you get something out of it? Would you like to see more style related posts over here? Did it inspire you to give the capsule wardrobe a try? I know, so many questions at once! But I'm curious to hear from you.

Thank you for tagging along and have a wonderful rest of the week!

My 10×10 Closet Challenge - Fall Edition (2017) - Day 7

Fall 2017 10×10 Challenge Look Day 7 by Conscious by Chloé

Welcome to Day 7 of the fall 10×10 Challenge.

In case you were wondering what the 10th item of my 10x10 was, there it is! (yes, I totally lied last week when I told you that the sweater was the last one, sorry!)

I'm not a fan of outerwear, I really just consider it as a protection from the elements, and not a part of my styling decisions.

I usually have a bunch of jackets lying around in my car, and I grab one whenever I need one. But if I had to choose only one, this jacket would be it. I saved to buy it, and have been wearing it for a little more than 10 years now. I've only started taking care of it a couple years ago so it's got the right amount of patina, without totally falling apart, though I should definitely take care of a couple holes and prevent them from expanding.

My Day 7 Outfit

Proportions are key.

I thought this outfit would never make it to the blog, because, honestly, I'm not in love with it. The color combo is perfect (to me) but a loose top with loose pants, that's a big no-no for my figure.

3 more outfits to go. Now I'm starting to be afraid I'm no longer gonna be able to mix things up enough...

Do you also wear outfits because you feel good in them, no matter if they don't actually look good? Tell me I'm not alone!

My 10×10 Closet Challenge - Fall Edition (2017) - Day 4

Fall 2017 10×10 Challenge Look Day 4 by Conscious by Chloé

We're now at Day 4 of the fall 10×10 Challenge.

And you're discovering the last one of the 10 pieces I picked for this season.

I thought we'd never be able to shoot it since the weather has been so unpredictable for the past 2 days.

Yesterday, as I drove to the Maker Mixer event, the wind was blowing so hard that shop sandwich boards were flying in the middle of the streets, then it started raining, and finally, as if it weren't dramatic enough, it hailed!

Yep, we're in the Pacific NorthWest, there's no denying it. And I'm slowly realizing that I included no real outerwear in my selection. Although we all know that many people around here do not own umbrellas and prefer a good old rain jacket, I do carry one in my bag. Since my rain jacket ( a French brand, made in Madagascar) has got no waterproof seams (epic shopping fail), I just do without. People must think I'm a tourist, with my weather-inappropriate attire and my colorful umbrella. But I don't mind a bit.

Anyhoo, let's stop talking about the weather...

Fall 2017 10×10 Challenge Look Day 4 by Conscious by Chloé

My Day 4 Outfit

Yep, another sweater.

I had planned on adding a denim shirt to the mix, but, since I've been feeling really under the weather with these migraines, I opted for comfort.

Fall 2017 10×10 Challenge Look Day 4 by Conscious by Chloé

Sweater - I've had this one for a loooong time and the arms are a little short, and the color is a little yellowish, but I can't part with it. I remember Octave making a cute comment about the little wool balls and I think about it every time I decide to wear it. Similar here.

Pants - Lauren Winter, made in Portland, OR.

Shoes - Danner, made in Portland, OR.

Now I'm just gonna say that I wish my earrings were from this brand, but they're not, and insist on the fact that bringing your own cup at coffee shops is the best conversation starter, and that if, on top of that, you have a cute homemade cozy for your mason jar, you'll make new friends, for sure, so ditch the disposable cup and invest in a sustainable alternative!

Fall 2017 10×10 Challenge Look Day 4 by Conscious by Chloé

OK, now it's time for me to go to the gym. See you guys tomorrow!

Do you have any ethical rain jacket recommendations? Bonus points if they're cute too!

My 10×10 Closet Challenge - Fall Edition (2017) - Day 1

Fall 2017 10×10 Challenge Look Day 1 by Conscious by Chloé

After 2 years of admiring Lee's work from the sidelines, I've decided to join her 10×10 Challenge.

Transitioning from one season to another is a great time to take a close look at your closet. Fall is the start of a new era (Have you ever heard the "Fall is the new January" saying?), so one can be tempted to want a fresh start, buy a new school bag, new office supplies, and... new clothes. I'm totally guilty of that, but, year after year, try to repress that urge and find ways to be contempt with what I already own.

I've been meaning to join the challenge a couple times, but never got around to it. "I don't own a clothes rack anymore" (I literally sold the 2 I owned last week after our garage sale!), "I don't have the right background", "I should rent a studio and shoot al the looks at once", I found every excuse not to jump in.

And then, this morning, after finishing a time-consuming project last night, I realized I had this photo series in my camera...

What's the 10×10 Challenge

Here are Lee's guidelines:

  • Pick any 10 items from your current closet
  • Style those items into 10 different looks
  • Use 10 days to do it
  • Have fun and don’t take it too seriously!

This includes outerwear, tops, bottoms, and shoes. Accessories don't count (yay!).

Fall 2017 10×10 Challenge Look Day 1 by Conscious by Chloé

My 10 Items

Well, to be honest, I haven't selected them all yet... So I'm gonna compose with the items included in this outfit and add as I go. This might not be the easiest and most productive way, but as long as I'm having fun and respect the rules, I'm fine, right?

I might spend the evening playing dress up, check out my Insta Stories to see how it goes, and I'll report on my selection tomorrow.

For now, this is what I have in mind:

  • 2 Sweaters
  • 1 Shirt
  • 1 Top
  • 2 Pants
  • 1 Skirt
  • 1 Duster
  • 2 Pairs of shoes

My Day 1 Outfit

Cozy sweater, airy pants, bare ankles, and a little height.

This is an outfit I've been wearing non-stop for the past couple weeks. This my go-to outfit when the morning air is crisp, to go meet a friend for an early brainstorming session.

Fall 2017 10×10 Challenge Look Day 1 by Conscious by Chloé

Pants - These are by Portland maker Lauren Winter. I got this pair last summer at Johan and I can tell you that not one day passed without someone complimenting it on them. "I love your pants. They look so comfy." "I love your pants, that high waist!" "I love your pants, that's something my grandma would wear" (OK, now I realize that guy was ironic. Or was he?). Well, you get the picture, I'm never taking these off. They have definitely perfect for this "fuller" period in my life (hello, couple pounds gained during my month back in Europe!) - though they do not help me control my food intake (hello, elastic waist!) - and are the only pair of high waisted pants I can wear all day long while seating at my desk!

Sweater - That sweater, what can I say? A consciously made cashmere sweater! It doesn't get better than this. It's my (second) morning warm embrace (after Octave's). I've had them for a year now, and try really hard not to buy them in all the colors of the rainbow.

Shoes - And finally, clogs! I also got these at Johan (Laura knows my style). Perfect color, perfect height, no socks! Understated heels. Maybe I'll try a look with socks later. Just kidding, or maybe not?

Oh and I should mention my tote bag. I got it a couple months ago at the opening of Project Object, a shop that focuses on women, LGBTQ, people of color, artists and designers works. 100% of the profits from their sale will be donated to the girls who survived the horrific Portland Max attack that happened last summer. Now go get one!
